News

News is information about events which affect a large number of people. It can be published in newspapers, magazines, radio or on the Internet. The purpose of news is to inform and educate its audience. However, it is also often used for entertainment. This can be achieved through music and drama on radio, cartoons in newspapers or crossword puzzles on TV. People who work in the news industry and those who regularly read/watch/listen to news may have different opinions about what makes good news. However, there are some basic characteristics of news which most people understand.

One of the most important things to remember when writing a news story is that it should be about people. This is because it is the actions of humans that change the world and make it interesting. However, news can also be about non-human events which change the world – cyclones, bush fires, droughts and earthquakes.

A major factor in deciding whether something is newsworthy is whether it is significant or important. This will be different in each society because what is important or significant in one place might not be in another. For example, if a farm wall collapses and kills a cow but not a pig then the event might be significant to farmers but not to others.

Another factor in deciding what is newsworthy is whether it has happened recently. The reason is that it is important to know what is happening at the moment. This is because news stories are designed to report on the latest developments. It would not do to report on something that happened a week ago; the community will have moved on by then and will be talking about other things.

It is also important to note that a story does not have to be dramatic or even shocking to be newsworthy. Many stories are simply about something that has happened to a person or group of people and is worth mentioning. For example, if someone has just broken their arm then this might be worth reporting. However, if a celebrity has died then this will probably be a bigger story.

The final factor in determining what is newsworthy is how interesting or significant the event is. For example, if scientists discover an insect which has never been seen before it will be significant but it might not be very interesting to the general public. In this case it might only merit a few lines in a newspaper or on a news broadcast.

The decision of what is and is not newsworthy is made by a group of people within each organisation which publishes news. These people are usually called editors, news directors or news managers and they sift through recommendations from reporters and assistant editors to decide what will be included in the news. They are known as gatekeepers. They will often put the biggest news stories above the fold – that is, on the front page of a newspaper or on the top section of a news website.
